FCI Fairton’s “Dad Lab” a Big Hit!

This past Wednesday the FCI Fairton Re-Entry and Education Departments hosted parenting day with a “Dad’s Lab” event in the visiting room. I got to spend an afternoon with my nephews and godson playing games and conducting playful science experiments that included building toothpick towers with cheesy balls, marshmallows and gummy bears (some of which went mysteriously missing). Then we made some colorful slime and mini volcanoes that the kids go to make erupt. The little ones were issued goggles, lab coats and badges to “access all areas” (which, being the explorers that they are, the kids learned does not really men access to ALL areas). A dinosaur mascot came out to greet the crowd and was a big hit with the dinosaur-loving Nico (the 3-year-old with the gorgeous Steph Curry curls), who immediately identified it as a T-Rex, before we were allowed to grab some props and take pictures. There was popcorn, chips, cakes and pastries, and cotton candy that the kids helped to make. We ended by choosing books to read with the children that they were allowed to take home along with their slime and a little bag of goodies and pictures. All of the participating staff were absolutely amazing and wonderful with the kids. I honestly have no idea who had more fun, me or the children. But more importantly, we were allowed to bond in a way that just can’t happen during a regular visit. We need more of this type of interaction, not just with the children in our lives, but with our entire families and loved ones in the community. A huge shout out to FCI Fairton Re-Entry Affairs and Education Department staff and the other volunteer staff who showed up to make the day a hit.
